Herb box scheme

Spring box 2017. Inspired by a spring detox for your body and your house. Spring tonic #2, Digestive bitters #1, Spring greens sprinkle, Spring room spray, Sweet violet skin scrub, Spring time tea blend and yarrow seeds.

We are very excited indeed to launch the first quarterly medicinal herb box scheme in Sussex, and one of the first in the whole of the UK. With the first quarterly boxes dispatched in June 2016, this project has been taking flight and gathering momentum each quarter.

Only 40 boxes are available each quarter, the majority of those are reserved for orders on annual subscription. Choose from either a small box (3 items) or a large box (6 items). But try your luck on availability to order a one off box as well. Purchase yours now!

What will you get with each large box?

  • 6 seasonal readymade herbal products with all the information about how and when to use each product (see below for example box indicating range of products)
  • Information on how to recreate each product yourself at home including wildcrafting & botany tips
  • 2 x plant profiles of herbs featured in that box with clear information all about it’s growing habitat & botany, parts used, actions, which ailments to use it for, folklore and more
  • A free herbal consultation (via skype or face to face in Brighton/Sheffield park area) to make sure that every herbal product you receive in your box is safe for you. Taking into consideration any major health complaints and current medication and possible contraindications.
  • A packet of herb seeds with directions of how to grow yourself at home in the garden or in a pot

Over the course of a year, our large boxes will typically contain a selection of the items listed below. Our small boxes will contain any 3 products listed below depending on which herbs have the highest yields that quarter.

December 2016 box with vegan medicinal stock bags, Immune boosting oxymel, Golden milk powder, Hibernation tea blend and vegan Hygge body butter
  • 100ml seasonal tonic. A traditional annual cycle could include; violet syrup, Nettle & cleevers elixir, Elderberry & hawthorn tonic & rosehip oxymel
  • 100ml tincture, either a single herb or a mix. A yearly cycle could include; Immune support, anti-viral, detoxifying & digestive bitters herb mixes.
  • 25g of dried herb tea. Either aerial parts or roots as simples or blends.  NB:  The small box will rarely contain the tea blend as this is the most labour intensive product in the box, using the most bulk material so therefor more limited.
  • 30-60g cream, ointment or topical preparation.  A yearly cycle could include; Respiratory chest rub, anti-histamine cream, wound ointment & cayenne pain relief salve
  • A first aid item; Wound powder, antiseptic wash, electrolyte blend & antispasmodic liniment
  • Undefined final 6th item ranging from either: 50ml infused oil, household spray to a natural personal care product (gender dependent) or food item; St. Johns wort oil, herbal mouthwash, rosehip facial oil & cleansing room spray or medicinal stock bags, dried wild supergreens & adaptogen energy balls

img_0653-fbFollowing the seasonal cycle through medicine that is available is very connecting to the natural world around us. Listed above as sample products are the most commonly known seasonal preparations which will sometimes be included in a box but we will also aim to use lesser known products to help you widen your learning range.  We envision that we can create a 3 year cycle without sending out the same product twice….. Unless there are the odd favourites that people request each year and even then we will make them variations so new combinations can be explored.

Community Supported Herbalism

Want to find out more about Community Supported Herbalism, the foundational inspiration behind the box scheme, as well as more details about where the herbs will be grown and concession rates for the box in exchange for volunteering?

See this herbal box scheme as a home herbal study that can last up to 3yrs. Tasting each medicine will allow you to digest better the plants healing abilities. Growing the herbs from seed helps you get to grips with plant families, botany and the ability to recognise more plants while out for a walk. Making a herbal product yourself at home (esp with the kids) will encourage us all to see the magic and wonder of the living world around us and the abundance of mother natures medicine chest

Each quarter we will have a community day at the herb garden with a chance for you to visit, get to know the herbs in person, maybe do a spot of weeding while at the same time collect your box & save postage costs. Boxes can also be posted all over the UK. Additional postage costs apply.

Herb Box collection and Volunteer dates

If you plan to save postage costs and collect your box from the herb garden in Sheffield Park, Nr Uckfield we have 4 set dates which you can do so. Clear directions to Wowo campsite can be found here. Follow signs to reception and you will drive past the polytunnel and garden.

Can I give a herb box as a present?

This is a question that frequently comes up.  The recipient has to have a quick consultation with me before I can post them the box. This is to comply with UK law around the sales of herbal medicines, and is best practice to make sure the herbs used are 100% safe for that individual.  If a product does not suit that individual then it can easily be replaced with a suitable alternative or a bespoke tincture blend.
